h Services hold in many high schools even in Sonoma County. It is called Peer Counseling. CLARY ICOUNSELING of kids coun- kids is taking A peer counseling program begins with the selection of 30 to 40 student volunteers. The majority of the students should be sophomores or freshmen so that once trained they will be around for a while to help other youths in their school. After the volunteers have been selected, trained professionals provide up to 32 hours of education and training in counseling, self- awareness, techniques for dealing with problems ranging from suicide at- tempts to problems with teachers, parents, boy and girl friends. Films, video tapes, vocal tapes and role playing are used throughout the training. The volunteers receive information on agencies in the area serving youths and families. They listen to speakers and trainers from the drug abuse council, mental health, and Orenda Cenenter (alcohol abuse problems). They act out sample situations and discuss how they would deal with different problems. They learn more about themselves and the people they will be working with. An important part of the peer counselors job includes being able to provide in- formation and referral to students seeking help and or advise. Therefore, part of the training focuses on the people, agencies, and services available in their areas including health clinics, counseling centers, resources for emergency housing and food, runaway shelters, legal aid, family planning information, drug abuse programs, alcohol abuse programs, and career planning information. The peer counselor [earns where to get information on all these areas and where to refer the students needing help. After the volunteers have been trained the school is asked to provide the space for a "peer counseling center" in the school itself. The student volunteers fix up the counseling room and each volunteer spends one free period staffing the center s that the counseling room is open each school day, all day long. The student volunteers receive school credits for going through the training program and for staff'mg Wednesday, December 3, 1980- Page 7 the peer counseling center. Usually a teacher or counselor also becomes involved with the program and receives the training and actl as an advisor and coordinator with the student volunteers. The initial core of student volunteers and teacher will be responsible for con- tinuing the progam, recruiting volunteers to relace those that leave the program and providing ongoing traimng for the new recruits. A peer counseling program is being im- plemented in the Heald- sburg High School.
