This should be a ban- ner year for the turkey hunters. There was an excellent hatch and good populations of birds can be found in Lake and Mendocino counties. The challenge will be for the unattached hunter to find a place to hunt. Most of the qual- ity areas are on private lands, but you can find local areas in the Cow Mountain and Cache Creek wildlife areas. Bag limit is one turkey of either sex per day, with one in possession. Shot time is 8 a.m. to sunset. PHEASANT 9EASON also opens up on Saturday, the unat- tached hunter has a lot of options to hunt in State and Federal wild- life areas. The Sacramento Valley offers quality hunting in refuge areas such as Colusa, Sutter, Sac- ramento, Gray Lodge and Dele- van. Pick up a copy of Fish and Game regulations for refuge hunt- ing if you are unfamiliar with hunting these areas. A copy should be available at all license dealers Bag limit is two males per day the first two days of the season and three males per day thereafter. DUCK HUNTING has been spotty. Hunters are waiting for the northern storms to bring some new ducks into the area. Best chance is early morning before the birds settle down for the day. Duck numbers are excellent this year and some bad weather should provide some quality hunts as the season progresses. DUNGENESS CRAB season also opens this Saturday in all counties except Humbolt, Men- docino and Del Norte (They'll open Nov. 29). See regulations for special closures in San Francisco and San Pablo bays. Crabbers hope for calm seas for the opener. OCEAN SALMON is now closed. All in all it was a good year with a lot of big fish. In the rivers, salmon are being .caught in the Smith and an- glers were picking up a few steel- head. Water levels are low and rivers are subject to closure. Call Fish and Game at 442-4502 for the latest updates. This is the time of year to get all yur steelhead gear in order so you are ready to go when the fish show up in our local rivers. ALBACORE reports are out of Fort Bragg. They are being caught five to 10 miles out from Noyo Har- bor. Fish to 60 pounds are being reeled in when seas permit. Be es- pecially cautious With small boats in the ocean. ConditiOns can change rapidly. CLEAR LAKE Bass fishing has been hot. Great fish are being taken from all over the lake. Worms, grubs, crankbaits and spinnerbaits have all been effective. Big bass in the seven to 10 pound range are being caught at night with power worms and bass magic aggravator worms. Try the rattlesnake area. Catfishing has been hit and miss lately. Try drifting Warm Springs hatchery Catches Chinook salmon Lake Sonoma Park Ranger Bar- bara Cooper has announced the return of the first Chinook salmon of the season to the Don Clausen Warm Springs Hatchery. The trappingstarted Oct. 28 with a catch of five males, one female and two immature Chinooks. On the second day of trapping, a sixth male, two additional females and another immature fish were caught. The first egg collection was performed Friday. This is a promising start for the Dry Creek fish runs. The upper deck of the hatchery is operated by the US Army Corps of Engi- neers and is open to the public Thursdays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors can watch the traps being checked and the sorting activity at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p,m. The goal of the hatchery is to ob- tain enough eggs to raise and re- lease one million Chinook smolts each year. Visitors planning a trip to the hatchery specifically to see multi- tudes of fish may wish to wait for the larger runs of Steelhead during the months of January, February or March.
