Page 6, Cloverdale Reveille, October 22, 1997 Eagles lose league opener to Kelseyville By Roberta Lyons The Cloverdale Eagles varsity football team lost its league open- er with Kelseyville Friday night, 39-44. In the first quarter, with nice runs by TJ Bird, Eagles drove down the field and scored on a 15 yard pass to Dave Smith from Brady Cox. The extra point was good. The second touchdown came with a 42 yard run by TJ Bird. PAT failed. TJ Bird scored again in the sec- ond quarter on a seven yard run. A great block by Mark Selberg allowed the QB, Brady Cox, the time to throw a 56 yard pass to Chris Lands for another TD. Leading 25 to 14 late in the sec- ond quarter Kelseyville held Clo- verdale on a 4th down attempt with an incomplete pass. The In- dians took over on downs, drove the field and scored. The conver- sion was good which brought the score to 25-22 at half time. Kelseyville came in after half- time fired up and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter giving them a 38-25 lead, but the Eagles fought back in the fourth quarter with a 19 yard touchdown run by Chris Lands. Kick was good. Kelseyville answered with an- other touchdown, and had a lead of 44-32 when a 36 yard pass play from Brady Cox to Dustin Haug resulted in another score. The con- version by the Eagles was suc- cessful. With three minutes left in the game Cloverdale tried an onside kick - the referees interpreted that Cloverdale touched the ball which gave Kelseyville the possession enabling them to run out the clock ending the game at 44-39 "Offensively we looked pretty good," noted coach Rick Berry, "but defensively we have some voids to fill." The coach pointed out that the Eagles gave up some big plays and had some crucial penalties that really hurt. The JVs lost 35-0 in a game that coach Steve Stewart described as not having too many bright spots. The Eagles meet Lower Lake this Friday in a home game. JVs start playing at 5:45.
