Page 6- Wednesday, October 15, 1980 Jim Anders, park ranger, is showing a model of the Stilling Basin. As water is released from the dam it comes oat at a high rate of speed. The Stilling Basin is designed to slow the water down thus helping to prevent erosion from the streambed below the dam. The model also incorporates the beginning of the fish ladder which allows the fish migrating up stream to go to the hatchery. PhOto by Janice. Night and day, over and over, huge earth movers criss-cross the valley and hillsides at the Warm Springs Dam-Lake Sonoma site. They are followed by huge graders, discs and finally rollers to compact the fill. The drivers climb into their cabs at six a.m. Twenty hours, two ten-hour shifts, they carve thousands of cubic yards of earth out o{ the mountainsides and plant it at the confluence of Warm Springs and Dry Creek, the site of the Dam. The engines are shut down at 2 a.m. and cws work until 6 a.m. to maintain the equipment. The process begins all over again at 6 a.m. Across the.valley, they work round th clock. At the northeastern, or side of the dam, three shifts of workers are finishing work on the huge system for releasing water from what will be Lake Sonoma into Dry Creek. When the project is completed four concrete tunnels will deliver water from the lake to a 300-foot high shaft, a giant concrete blender in which the desired quality of water will be achieved before it goes --What Lurks Within the Haunted House?
