Page 6, Cloverdale Reveille, October 8, 1997 Mendocino falls to Cloverdale 57-0 By Roberta Lyons a 10 yard run followed by a good It was a lopsided win over Men- docino (57-0) for the Cloverdale Eagles varsity football team last Friday night. "It was not a pretty game," com- mented coach Rick Berry. On the first possession in the first quar- ter, after a Cardinal fumble recov- ered by Mike CastriUo, TJ Bird ran 35 yards for the touchdown. The kick by Brady Cox was good. Late in the first quarter Cox kicked a 40 yard field goal. To start the second quarter TJ Bird made a 34 yard run for the touch- down, the kick was wide right. Bird made another touchdown midway through the second quar- ter on an eight yard run but the kick failed. Chris Lands ended the half with a sac to Mendocino. Score 29-0. At the start of the half the Car- dinals muffed the kickoff and Brenden Hampton recovered for the Eagles. The quarterback hand- ed off to Chris Lands who scored on a 10 yard run PAT failed. Mendocino made a pass for a first down but the Eagles were able to stop the drive on the third down with a nice tackle by Ben Smith and Antonio Lopez forcing the punt. The Eagles drove down the field on a 14 yard run by Mike CastriUo and a 27 yard run by Chris Lands giving Cloverdale a first and goal to end the quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Mike Castrillo scored on two point conversion on a Cox pass to Brendon Hampton. Two more touchdowns came in the fourth quarter when Ryan Peters, after retuminR; the punt 33 yards scored on a seven yard run; again the kick was good. Chris Lands made the second touch- down on a six yard run;; the kick by Brady Cox was good. Mike CastriUo, Chris Lands, and Brenden Hampton all had fumb. le recoveries. Dustin Haug had an interception, returning 18 yards and Ryan Peters had an intercep- tion returning 24 yards Leading tackler was Mike Cas- trillo with eight tackles; Chris Lands had three unassisted and five assisted tackles; Logan Crump had two unassisted and three as- sisted tackles and Kevin Cook- man had one unassisted and six assisted tackles. TJ Bird had 16 carries and ran 202 yards. He only played the first two quarters of the game. TJ is just 50 yards short of 1,000 yards going into this week's game. David Smith had two catches for 30 yards and one touchdown and Sean Montano had two catch- es for 19 yards. The Eagles play Middletown at Middletown on Saturday, Oct. 11 with junior varsity play starting at 5:30 p.m. At Cloverdale Mendocino - 0 0 0 0 - 0 Cloverdale - 17 12 14 14 - 57 Ben Smith (I) plays guard on offense and is a Ilnebecker on defense. He is a junior at CHS and had a nice tackle during Friday night's game with Mendocino. Kevin Cookmsn is an offensive fullback and defen- sive middle linebacker. He is s junior at Cioverdsls High School. Hector Galvsn (I) is s senior st CH8 and this is his first year playing football. Hector plays offensive guard and defensive lineman. Anto- nio Lopez, a senior, is also a first-year player. He plays safety and wide receiver. Lopez had s nice tackle in Friday night's game. i I i Eagles defeat Calistoga team By Roberta Lyons The Cloverdale Eagles varsity volleyball team defeated Calisto- ga on Thursday, Sept. 30. The Eagles won the first two sets, 16,14 and 15,3; lost the third, 16,14 and won the fourth 15,8 Bonnie McDonald had 11 ser- vice points with three aces; Kris- tin Lane had 21 service points and four aces; Krista Warren had 15 service points, two aces and 15 kills; Danielle Bird, five service points with five kills; Monica Dal- ton, one point and six kills; Kaitlin Jensen, three service points; Katie Gunnink, four service points, one ace and five kills. This was the second time the Eagles defeated Calistoga - "they are a pretty good team," noted coach Margaret Fitzgerald. The Eagles meet Rincon Valley Chris- t/an and Middletown this week. North Coast Central League play starts on Tuesday Oct. 14 in an away game with Kelseyville.
