Page 10, - Wedr, esday, September 17, 1980 I II I WORKSHOP On Monday, Septemer 8, the Washingtn School faculty and SITE Council members attended a two-hour workshop after school during which Dr. Jim Haslip, an expert on discipline and how children learn as well as the principal of K-8 school, swimming program for all seventh and eighth graders at the city pool. The emphasis is placed on passing the Red Cross certified life-saving and water safety course. This discussion was safety. " -- . By C. L. PAULSON ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE Washington School is running smoothly under a schoolwide Assertive , Discipline Plan. All students are aware of the school rules and the consequences ff they break these rules. Rewards are also provided through special assemblies and lot- tery ticket drawings for in- dividual prizes. Students throughout the school receive School Reports "tickets" for good citizen- ship, politeness, etc. Each Friday a drawing is held and students win various prizes provided through student body funds. In addition to a set of schoolwide rules each student will receive classroom rules from his or her individual teachers. These discipline plans are sent home to the parents for examination and they should be returned signed by the parent. Every student should be receiving or should have received a discipline plan. very informative and gave those involved some new ideas for enriching and im- proving their programs. A vital part of achieving this improvement is the in- volvement of the community in supporting the school. The particular emphasis at Washington School this year is on improving reading and language skills under the present School Improvement Program• Teachers at Washington are also currently involved in evaluating and revising the present promotion and retention policies and setting new standards for achievement in reading and math. Dr. Haslip's presentation was one of a series of workshops scheduled through SIP and the school SITE Council to give teachers new insights and ideas about curriculum enrichment. • SWIMMING • The junior high P.E. department is running a SITE COUNCIL The Washington School SITE Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sep- tember 24, at 7 p.m. in the Washington School Library. All interested community members are encouraged tc attend. EVALUATION All students at Washington School are taking a battery of standardized tests which will enable the teacher to evaluate students' academic strengths and weaknesses. Students will be instructed on an individual and group basis during the year in areas which need improvement and will be tested again in the spring. At that time evaluations will be made of growth in math, language and reading. Other subject areas will have teacher devised pro- and post tests to analyze achievement. Aspirin There is so much to tell you about Jefferson School, that we hardly know where to begin. We decided that since We will be coming to you weekly through this column, we would take priorities. This week's priority is volunteers. Let us tell you a little history of the Volunteer In- Volvement. About six years ago, Wilson Riles, our state s1erintendent of schools was distressed because the state levels in reading were quite low. Mr. Riles came up with the idea of the Early Childhood Education program, which was im- plemented in the kin- dergarten and first grades only. This program had to be applied for by the schools, and then special funding was granted for specialized reading teachers, learning equipment, etc. One of the top priorities in the Early Childhood Education was that there must be a certain amount of time given in the classrooms by volunteers. That is how the volunteer program started at Jefferson School. If you are a senior citizen, if you are retired, if you have even one hour to spare a week, you can be a volunteer, and help some child to become a better reader. We are therefore appealing to everyone in the community to please volunteer for the helping of our most precious commodity, our future citizens of tomorrow. If you wish further in- formation, please contact the school. Or if you would like to have a program presented for your organization on volunteers and the School Improvement Program, please contact us. extended it through the third grades, with, of course, the priority that volunteers be in those classrooms. (Where 75 percent of both parents work the volunteers were needed in the classroom to help give individualized help to the children.) Now we have the School Improvement Program, and this program covers all grades from kin- dergarten through high school. In the past few years, Jefferson School's reading program has been mentioned as having an outstanding program on the state level, and this is largely due to the new program, but much help has been given because of the volunteer who is able to give individualized help. This year again,Jefferson School has the School Improvement Program, which entities them to specialized teachers, materials and, of course, we must have the volunteers. Since so many of the parents work and are not able to come to school to volun- teer, we are reaching into the community for volunteers. A volunteer can be a man or a woman, and they take We can only be a better school ff everyone in the community becomes in- volved.
