Cloverdale Harvest Marathon planned for Sunday, Oct. 23 By Neena Hanchett October is a beautiful time of year in and around Cloverdale. People come from all over to ride in the Tour de Vine and this year marathon runners are invit- ed to run in the first ever Cloverdale Harvest Mara- thon. The event will include a full marathon, a half mara- thon and a 5K fun walk/run. Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Cloverdale, this event promises to bring visi- tors to Cloverdale and show them a really good time; involve residents in Cloverdale in a fun and rewarding Community event and will raise funds for a brand new Cloverdale Imagination Library childrens' literacy pro- gram. Started by Dolly Parton in 1996, the program was designed to benefit Sevier County, her home county located in eastern Tennessee. She wanted to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families in her county. Parton wanted children to be excited about books and feel the magic that books can bring into childrens' lives. Imagination Library insures that every child can have books, regardless of their family's income. Parton set up her foundation, The Dollywood Foun- dation to expand Imagination Library to other commu- nities who clamored for it. Here's the way it works: An organization in the community, in the case of Cloverdale, The Kiwanis Club of Cloverdale Founda- tion, guarantees to make the program accessible to all pre-school children in their community. ....... They pay for the books and'~mailing, promote the program, register the kids and enter information into the program's database. From there the Dollywood Foundation takes over and manages the system to deliver the books into chil- drens' homes. Today, Cloverdale joins hundreds of communities across the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom enrolled in the this early literacy program for kids. Currently there are only 4702 children enrolled in the state of California. The program mails a brand new, age appropriate book to every child under five. The child's first book is The Little Engine That Could and the last book, which is mailed the month that the child turns five is Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come. In order to raise money for the books and postage, the Kiwanis Club of Cloverdale Foundation is present- ing this first ever Cloverdale Harvest Marathon. The start and end point for the full and half marathon is the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds. Runners will begin ar- riving in Cloverdale on Saturday, Oct. 22 and for $10, will enjoy a pre-race pasta dinner. The full marathon (26.2 miles) is $95 until Sept. 30 then the price is $100. The half-marathon (13.1 miles) is $80 until Sept. 30 is $80, after that date the price is $95. Entrants will get a technical running shirt, finishers will get a medallion and a post-race meal. Registration for the 5K Fun Run/ Walk (3.1 miles) is $25 for adults, five to 16 years is $10 with an event shirt and $5 with no shirt. Under age five is free. If you are not a runner, you can volunteer, be a sponsor, or enjoy the post race meal and live music for $7.50.
