Remarks SERVICES The last several articles in this column have delt with the topic of child abuse. We have learned that the abuse of children can fall into five basic categories: 1. Physical abuse and corporal punishment. 2. Physical neglect and-or inadequate supervision. 3. Emotional neglect or deprivation. 4. Emotional abuse 5. Sexual abuse and ex- ploitation. All five of these areas have been discussed during the past few weeks. The reason for these articles have been to make you more aware of the problems that exist in the area of child abuse. I have tried to make you more aware of what child abuse is, what the signs of abuse are, and what you can and should do about it. Why? Because, "On the basis of existing information national estimates indicate that nearly one million American children are suffering abuse and-or neglect at any given lime and that approximately one-quarter of these will be permanenlly injured for life as a result. (Fur- Vhermore) in reviewing available data from a variety of sources, it is generally recognized that a great deal of abuse and neglect is committed against children under 4 years of age." It cannot he stressed strongly enough, therefore, that we rely mainly on third- party reporting (neighbors, olher family members, friends, pre-school teachers, elc.) to identify and do something about these case. What About The Laws? There are laws against both the abuser and anyone failing to report suspected child abuse. Child abusers may be arrested, prosecuted, fined, imprisoned or instructed to take part in treatment programs. If you want or need more specific information on what the child abuse laws are, contact the youth services office or police department. Copies of the laws will be made available to you. Those Involved with Child Abuse and Neglect Many agencies are in- valved with cases of child abuse and neglect beginning with the agency receiving the initial report (usually the police or child protective services) on through the court and judicial system, Wednesday, August 20, 1980- Page 7 adult and juvenile probation, juvenile court, the medical profession, mental health and counselors and support groups for the offender, the family, and the victim; social welfare, and the schools. BUT, the important first step is the report either from a third party or from the victim, or the suspect- offender himself.
