Sonoma County Transit, the countywide public transit service, will be introducing the new Bikes on Buses program. The new program is designed to coax commuters out of their cars and onto the bus. Sonoma County Transit has received many requests to allow bicycles on buses. The program has successfully completed a trial period on three routes this last spring. The cost for implementing this program is minimal because ol the low tech solution to bicycle securement. Bicyclists will board with their bikes and secure them in the designated wheelc hair ticdow n area inside the bus. All Sonoma County Transit buses have two ticdown ar- eas, thus allowing two bicycles to use the bus. Of course, passengers in wheelchairs will always have prioriu, over bicyclists. Bicyclists must be aware they will be bumped off the bus in order to accommodate a wheelchair passenger. Some bus trips may not be able to accommodate bicyclists due to full passenger loads. Bicyclists should call Sonoma County Transit information and ask about specific trips. The first I(X} callers will receive the "Official Sonoma County Transit Fanny Pack."
