This year the Post raised over $1,650 to defray the cost of the Children's Christmas Party, complete with Santa Claus and gifts and for the donation to the Cloverdale High School's Band trip to Vienna, Austria. All of these figures do not count the monies spent in the same area by the Post 293 Legion Auxiliary Unit. Nationally, The American Legion is the largest veterans' organization in the U,S., and in Cloverdale it is the most active. Now that we have installed our new of- ficers, with Jack Durham as Commander, additional new ideas are expected to con- tinue the interest in the community. Two ideas are on the "drawing boards" at this moment : the first, is the possibility of a choral group. Post 293 is very fortunate in having what I think is one of the finest directors in the Cloverdale area as a mem- ber. And he, Comrade Raymond Gobielle, has suggested that a singing group be formed within the Post made up of Legionnaires and Auxiliary members So if any veleran who feels he may be eligible to join lhe Legion first, and hen ry out for the singing group he is asked to be presenl ai the next regular meeting to be held at the Cloverdale Veterans Memorial Building on Wednesday. August 13, at 7:30 pro. Incidentally, we have a fine pianist who has consented to become part of the group if we can get the notes off the ground. I hope no one comes up with the name "Legion Aires" for the proposed group. But please continue to give the name some thought, I am sure Comrade Gobielle will ap- preciate it. The second idea which is in the formative stages is the formation of a Sons of the Legion Squadron in Ooverdale. Any Legionnaire or veteran who may he eligible'to join, who has a son or sons interested in such a fine organization, is asked to also be present at the next post meeting. While out of town for a couple of weeks recently, I understand that the emergency hospital units were moved into Cloverdale and stored at the Citrus Fairgrounds. When I- get additional information on this subject I will impart it to you, but here again the local Legion Post was the prime i mover in getting these units located in Cloverdale. In Cloverdale the American Legion is on the move...join an outfit that not only "can do" but has done it and continues to do it, if you can. I I 345 S. Cloverdale Blvd. NEWHOURS: 9a.m.-8o.m.
