Page 6, Cloverdale Reveille, July 9, 1997 Those who accidently cause wildland fires held liable The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) is alerting residents in the Sonoma Lake Napa Unit of the danger of wildland fires caused by negligent use of mechanized equipment. The use of tractors, mowers, weedeaters and other mechanized equipment is a significant cause of wildland fires. On Wednesday, June 27, a six acre wildland fire was caused by the use of a mower late in the afternoon on a hot, dry and windy day. Six acres of wildland watershed and three rows of Chardonnay grapes were burned in the fire. Equipment caused fires are common throughout all the counties protected in the Sonoma Lake Napa Unit. Individuals responsible for these fires can face major expenses for their negligence. The costs of controlling the fire (engines, air tankers, helicopter, dozers, etc.) are normally billed to the people found at fault. They can also face civil and criminal damages and fines. All residents are reminded to mow before noon, when tempera- tures are lower and humidity is higher. Also the need to be sure proper spark arrestors are in place on any mechanized equipment. Guidelines and information are available at any CDF station. Friendly staff of Manzanita Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
