But without corrosion resistant metals, time took its toll on the piping and turbines. In addition, other sources of electricity, particulary hydroelectric sites were available and more economical. Concentrated efforts to develop geothermal steam at The Geysers resumed in the late 1950's. Aminoil In- ternational, Inc., a subsidiary .of R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., through its principal operating company Aminoil USA, Inc. expanded fr.om its oil and gas operations to include this unique energy source in 1965. Following lease acquisitions Aminoil drilled its first exploratory well in 1967. However, it was not until 1969 that the first well capable of commercial production was completed. That well at Castle Rock Springs in Lake County led to discovery of the company's first geothermal steam field, and later confirmation that a substantial reservoir of steam existed. The heat source for geothermal steam - molten rock radiated heat energy through the solid rock above, heating water from un- derground sources and surface runoff. The intense heat transforms water to steam, which either remains locked in fractures below the surface or escapes to the surface as "fumeroles." The Geysers area offers unique opportunities for geothermal development. Unlike other areas of the United States, the source of heat - magma - rises to within 5 to 10 miles of the surface. Aminoil's geothermal steam discoveries have been made at depths averaging 6000 feet. This unique accessibility of dry steam has made The Geysers the site of the only commercial geothermal project for the production of electric power in the United States and the largest geothermal installation of any kind in the world. Aminoil is exploring for and is currently producing geothermal steam on a commercial scale. The earth's interior - a hot mass of dense motlen liquids - is a potential energy source far larger than all the hydrocarbons in its outer crust. Geothermal steam and hot water, which are locked in the fractures beneath the earth's surface, could help generate electricity, stimulate agricultural crop growth, or even heat a swimming pool. Yet, still unknown is what extent this powerful energy source can be developed economically and transmitted in quantities sufficiently large to be considered a viable energy alternative. Aminoil is pioneering an effort to help find the an- swers. In this known federally designated geothermal resources area, "The Geysers" in Sonoma and Lake Counties, Aminoil is developing and supplying steam to spin the turbine for the world's largest geothermal steam powered electric plant. This plant - designed to generate 135,000 kilowatts - is capable of producing enough elec- tricity to serve the needs of a community of more than 100,000 people. Further, because the steam Arninoil estimates its geothermal steam reserves at The dedicated to Plant 13 alone to be equal to about million barrels of crude oil i ii < i!iii!i more than 3.000 acre at the Geysers to exploration and production for specific projects. ii Cellars Winery completes major refinancing financing has always Bank of America sir .e we of required a guarantor. Their achievements to date were not made without help. The foresight of the major utility companies served as an inducement. And the many state and local government agencies and committees, which are concerned with economic development and ensuring that the environment is properly managed and protected, have provided the cooperation and support necessary to proceed with the large investments required. This kind of continued part- nership will help to solve at least some of the nation's energy problems.
