Delfino was the only Golden Bear player to finish with two hits as he went 2x4 on the day. The Bears lost to the number one Division I team in the nation, Vir- ginia, by the score of 4 to 1. Mitch had some nice plays at third base as well, including a runner up the line where he threw out a would be base hit on a bunt attempt, a play they showed over and over on the ESPN broadcast. On what started out as a simple plane trip to Omaha became an ad- venture that every college player dreams about. The second the Cal players stepped off the plane they were treated as professional athletes. A special bus with the team name on it, a police escort everywhere they drove, and a surprise stop on the way to their hotel. The coach told the players to close their eyes as he went through the journey from the day the adminis- tration announced they were cutting baseball through the Pac 10 season and then to the ultimate goal of ev- ery college baseball team in the na- tion, The College World Series. He then had the players open their eyes and they were at the TD Ameritrade Park, the state of the art brand new stadium where in its inaugural year they will be hosting the 2011 Col- lege Baseball World Series. A venue that holds 24,000 people and fills up almost each and every game. They took some pictures and the journey began. Free merchan- dise was handed out everywhere they went as they were treated to new cleats, gloves, pants, shirts, hats, and even slick Oakley sun glasses. The entire community ca- ters to these athletes as they work their way from event after event. The team photos, media day inter- views, media day photo shoots, and the autograph sessions are all part of the experience. The players are interviewed by newspaper report- ers, live TV reporters, and by cell phones from those at various news agencies that may not be in atten- dance. Throw in all the practice times and team meetings and you can see why the players eagerly await the day when they can simply hit the field and play ball. The opening cer- emony festivities were off the charts as they introduced all the players on each team and had parades, stream- ers, fireworks, awards, video high- lights of the games that each team clinched, and then the great Martina McBride sang the National Anthem. Former President George Bush threw out the first pitch of game one and the dream finally became a re- ality. Each and every time Mitch came to bat or was introduced to the crowd it was always put out there that he was from Cloverdale, Cali- fornia. A lifelong resident who started out playing tee ball on the back lot at Jefferson Elementary School was now in the national spot- light representing our small town in a big way. In a continued story line of come from behind wins, late season reinstatement, and the whole underdog label, the team deemed by the media and broad- casters as "The Cinderella Team" will have to travel through the long and grueling losers bracket to get to the championship game. Cal con- tinues play against Texas A&M in an elimination game on this Tuesday, June 21, at 11a.m. Check your local listings to see where it will be played live. All World Series games are live via an ESPN affiliate. We would like to wish Mitch Delfino and the California Golden Bears the best of luck as they contin- ue their quest for a national title.
