BAAST is a partnership established in 1996 by the Golden State Warriors, Oakland A's, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and San Jose Sharks to enhance the efforts of students striving to be the best they can be and ultimately help Bay Area youth reach their educational goals. Meier attended a special scholarship awards ceremony along with six other students at the San Francisco 49ers headquarters and training camp in Santa Clara. Joining him at the event were his family and CHS Principal Dave Ashworth. Among the notables they were able to meet included 49ers Bryant Young and Brent Jones, former Raider and hall offamer Jim Otto, the head captain of the San Jose Sharks, the manager of the Oakland A's, represen- tatives of the Warriors, and Lisa and Nicki DiBartolo gave them a tour of the 49ers lockeroom. But the best part for Meier was being interviewed by television reporters and appearing on Channel 4, 5 and 7 news. Candidates for the scholarship had to be nominated by a school official, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and complete and submit the BAASST application including an essay written by the student to a regional team representative. Meier was the CIF Scholar Athlete of the Year at CHS. He plans on entering California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and specialize in the area of materials engineering.
