Alfred passed away before the gym was complet- ed. We couldn't change lives without their support and the support of community members like them." Other community members have visited the Club in recent months, as well. Each of the 30 letters was paid for by individual residential and business donors. two articles Coloradan Virginia Harrison and Alaskan Jeanette LeGrue were introduced; this article focuses on Edward Ryden. Ryden grew up in a small mining town in Colo- rado, where he decided at an early age to be an artist, possibly a sculptor. World War II interrupted his studies, but at the same time exposed him to vastly different environments in Europe and Japan. By the time he finished his Bachelor's degree back in Boulder and his Master's from the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, his interests also included printmaking, specifically woodcuts, as he recognized that medi- um's ability to portray "the centrality of the environ- ment in human existence. " During that period his work was exhibited frequently in Bay Area venues such as the Oakland Art Museum, The San Francisco Art Festivals, and the College of Marin Art Gallery. Temple Emanuel in San Francisco hosted one among a total of three solo printmaking exhibits, as well as one on sculpture at the Art Coop, Berkeley. Next, an extended stay in Israel from 1985 to 2002 placed Ed and his wife Jean in the hills of Galilee, yet another environment and period of artistic creativity. As a member of the Israel Society of Painters and Sculptors, Ryden exhibited his work in Jerusalem, Haifa, and a number of new communities such as New Olim, Nahariya, and Carmiel. His work is still in the Nahariya community center collection. A third period in his work began when he and Jean relocated to Santa Rosa. In addition to showing and selling sculpture, he has been a frequent print exhibitor at Sebastopol Center for the Arts and the Arts Council of Sonoma County. At SCA he won a Merit Award for an etching and Best of Show for a collage. At ACSC he won Best of Show for a bronze sculpture. In the Cloverdale show, viewers will see woodcuts from various periods which offer an opportunity to reflect on his multiple environmental and professional influences. The show will run Mon.-Sat. 1-5p.m. and Mon. & Wed. 7-9 p.m. until May 21. Cloverdale Regional Library is located at 401 N.
