Charter member Sydney Sciaini, who has been active in the club since 1981, read a letter of congratulations received from the president 6~f Soroptimist International of the Americas. Cloverdale Police and Fire Departments represen- tatives were present to accept a donation of individ- ually bagged fleece blankets to distribute when they are in situations where children may be in need of comfort. A special thank you to the Cloverdale Ward Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints for their assistance in making the blan- kets. Cloverdale Soroptimists will be distributing a total of 70 blankets. Cloverdale Soroptimist member Cathy Mitchell presented the Women's Opportunity Award to Julie Johnson. The Women's Opportunity Awards pro- gram was established to assist women with primary financial responsibility for their families to obtain the skills-training and education necessary to im- prove their employment status and standard of liv- ing for themselves and their family. Julie is a single mother of three children who has just recently fin- ished her cosmetology training and passed her board examination. She was presented with a check for $2000, and each one of her children received a fleece blanket, and a pillow case hand painted by Gail Pardini-Plass to match the blanket. Soroptimist member Marcia Babb presented the Violet Richardson Award to Yanely Sanchez. Violet Richardson was the first president of the first Sorop- timist club founded in Oakland in 1921. The recogni- tion program honors young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer activities to make the commu- nity and world a better place. Yanely is a member of Key Club at the Cloverdale High School. Gradua- tions requirements include 60 hours of community service hours, and Yanely, through her activities in Key Club has logged over 400 hours. She was pre- sented with a check for $500, and a donation of $250 was made in her name to the Key Club. The final presentation of the evening, the Ruby Award, was presented by Cathy Mitchell to Pat- ty Bird. A ruby is a deep red gemstone associated wlth wisdom, impor- tance, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love: all words embodying strong and compassion- ate women.
