Page 12 - Wednesday, March 26,1980 Wine Lines By KATHERINE MALORY In their long and colorful past, Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. have been the setting for many memorable events; none of which, however, has included a premiere wine tasting from Sonoma County. This deficiency was corrected in late February, when twenty- three wineries brought their best wines to the east coast. The first tasting was held at the Harvard Club in Boston on February 24th, with ap- proximately 200 persons in attendance. In New York, two days later, nearly 600 tasters sampled the wines, and in Washington D.C. on February 28th, over 200 braved the cold to the Capital Hill Club. The wineries participating in the three tastings included: Alexander Valley Vineyards, Chateau St. Jean, Davis Bynum Winery, Louis J. Poppiano Winery, Grans Cru Vineyards, Hacienda Wine Cellars, Johnson's Alexander Vwlley Wines, Kenwood Vineyards, Landmark Vineyards, Buena Vista Winery, Clos du Be{s, Dry Creek Vineyard, Geyser Peak Winery, Gundlach Bundschu Winery, Iron Horse Vineyards, F Korbei & Brothers Champagne Cellars, Mark West Vineyards, Mill Creek Vineyards, Simi Winery Trentadue Winery, Pedroncelli Winery, Sonoma Vineyards, Souverain Cellars. This was the first time the Sonoma County Wine Growers presented a com- bined tasting in the east. Over forty wines were available for tasting, many- served by the winemakers themselves. Eastern criticts, now admit, our wines equal if not surpass many of the fine wines of Europe. The tastings were most suc- cessful. PGgE seeks final approval for Unit 16 Pacific Gas and Electric Company has applied to the California Energy Com- mission to begin the final permit approval process for another electric generating unit at The Geysers, PG&E's geothermal power plant in Sonoma and Lake counties. The Application for Cer- tification (AFC) filed February 21 covers the planned Geysers Unit 16 and a 38-mile, 230,000-volt tran- smission line. The line will connect Unit 16 and planned future units at The Geysers to PG&E's transmission system at Laker{lie Substation east of Petaluma. The CEC on February 4 rejected PG&E's first AFC for Unit 16 and the new transmission line. The amended application in- cludes additional details on air quality and on the tran- smission line in response to that CEC action. The new filing sets in motion a nine-month permit approval process before construction can begin. Unit 16 will ad 110,000 kilowatts of generating capacity to The Geysers plant. With the 13 units now in operation, the two under construction, one scheduled to begin construction in March and two awaiting final permit approval, it will bring PG&E's generating capacity at The Geysers to 1,242,000 kilowatts. The new unit will be in Lake County, about a mile east of Unit 13, now under con- struction. When it starts operation in 1983, it will offset the need to burn about I million barrels of oil a year in conventional thermal plants. The generating unit will cost an estimated $68 million and the transmission line an estimated $.53 million. The figures have more than doubled since plans for the project were first announced four years ago. The first generating unit at The Geysers was placed in operation in 1960 by PG&E.
