Ran Brown is a student and teacher of the Sogetsu (Grass Moon) School of Japanese Flow- er arranging. He creates works on paper that fall into several categories. The first of these is black ink in either natural ren- ditions of bamboo or energetic abstract pieces which reflect the spirit ofichie-a term derived from the Japanese tea ceremony which means one time, one meet- ing. While ink and paper are traditional materials the meth- od of applying the ink to the paper is unconventional... branches from creek willows the ends of which are sharpened or pounded to give the desired ef- fect. +The second group arran's Work uses colored enamels on paper. With thee works variation in surface thickness and texture are explored and exhibit a three dimension aspect due to the thickness off the applied enam- els. The third group of works are oil Monotypes. These abstract works explore the interplay of color and form on the paper sur- face. These are the freest and most fluid of all works.
