Page 6, Cloverdale Reveille, February 19, 1997 The Great Academic Brain Wave Kickoffs were held last Wednesday at both Washington and Jefferson Schools. Non-profit representa- fives were there to speak to the classes about their organizations and thanked the students for choosing to donate 10% of their class proceeds from this fund-raiser, to them. Brain Wave Bob and Aca- demic AI (Brain Wave Ambassadors), were at the assemblies as well. Brain Wave Bob got so excited when he met a representative from the Animal Shelter that he rushed right down and adopted his new dog "Biff'. It was love at first sight. Now all Bob can do is talk about his new pet and gather pledges so his class will have a nice clonation for the Shelter to help other animals. Academic AI is Just hoping that Bob remembers to study his qusstlons before the Brain Wave event on March 20th. City oks contraqt with Sheriffs office for asset seizure services Cloverdale's police department has entered into an agreement with the Sonoma County SheriWs Department to provide asset seizure services for the City. The agreement, approved by the City Council, will provide a detective from the Sherifs department who will be available 24 hours per day to respond to and to investigate referred cases involving asset seizure. State and federal law authorizes law enforcement agencies to seize certain assets resulting from investigations that are usually tied to drug activity. Heretofore the Cloverdale Police Department has handled these seizures "in-house", but according to Police Chief Rob Dailey, the latest changes in asset forfeiture laws have made the process so complex and time consuming that his departme[tt does not have the staffneeded to properly identify and seize assets. For the services provided, the Sherifs Department will be entitled to 65% of the law enforcement share of state forfeiture assets recovered. The City will be entitled to 35%. Dailey notes that while 35% may seem to be a small return, the City is likely to receive more in asset seizures than in the past for the reason of scale. He sites an hypothetical case as an example: Assume the Cloverdale police make a drug case and find a small amount of cash. In the past this would be the department's seizure. Under this agreement the Sherifs detective would come to Cloverdale and begin the process of identifying bank accounts, real property and other assets covered by law. If they make a seizure the City would receive 35% of the law enforcement share of all lawful assets seized even though some were outside of Cloverdale or Sonoma County.
