Edward Jones also ranked No. 1 for large-sized companies. The full list and related stories appear in the Feb. 8 issue of FOR- TUNE, available on newsstands Jan. 25 and current- ly at www.fortune.com/bestcompanies. Edward Ending 72 months in the Navy-cont. amount of money I was to receive on my discharge, counting so many days leave I had coming. The paymaster was a Lieutenant Commander. As you took your turn and sat down in front of his desk with a long line of sailors waiting, the paymaster would say: "This is the correct amount of pay you will receive on your discharge. Do you agree?" All you could say is: "I guess so," not seeing any figures or anything. When you said: "I guess so," he had a rubber stamp in his hand and he stamped "Correct." on the paper, and then hollered: "Next." Finally, Dec. 23, 1945 morning arrived. Everyone, including me, was really happy. I had shipped my seabag and hammock to Ann in Berkeley by Railway Express, so all I had was my little ditty bag, with personal articles in it. I was wearing my dress blues. We were marched by a table where a Yeoman handed me a big packet of papers with my name on the front. Big letters on the front: "Do not open until told to do so." As we all got settled (about five hundred sailors) a Captain came out on the stage and gave us a fifteen minute speech. I cannot recall anything he said. I wanted to look in the envelope and see what was in there. He finally told us to open the package and make sure our discharge papers were in there, also our mustering out pay, and our discharge pin called: "The Ruptured Duck." I was marched out of the gate, caught a bus down- town to the Greyhound Bus Station at Los Angeles for a ride to Berkeley. I got to the bus station, and I think every sailor in the Navy had gotten there ahead of me. I never saw so many sailors. Lines up to get tickets, lines to get on the bus, lines to the restrooms. I figured it was going to take me at least one or two days to get a bus out of Los Angeles. Besides, it was misting rain, not raining hard, just enough to get you wet. I was standing inside the bus depot, looking at all the timetables, etc. This middle aged civilian, walked up beside me and asked where I was going. I was surprised a little. I told him: "San Francisco Bay Area." He told me he was getting a carload to go to the Bay Area. He had two other sailors lined up. He needed four and himself, to make five in a car. "How much?" "Fifteen dollars per person," he said. If I was interested I was to go stand by his car parked on the curb, and he showed me where, and he would collect the money when he found another passenger. I went where his car was parked. Not too bad looking and had good tires on it. The other two sailors and I got acquainted, then a sailor came along that knew one of the other sailors. He was trying to get to the Bay Area, also, so he went in search of the owner of the car. In the meantime, the owner came back with another sailor and said we were ready to go, as quick as he had collected the money. He loaded everyone up, laid down one rule: "no drinking!" Suited the rest of us just fine. We got away from Los Angeles following Highway 99, at about 12 p.m. on Dec. 23, 1945. We stopped in Fresno, California and bought a big sack of hamburgers for everyone. We arrived in Berkeley about 1:30 a.m. I went to the Y.M.C.A. I was real lucky that the guy had made contact with me. The good Lord was looking after me. As I knew he was by my getting a beautiful, wonder- ful, young lady for a wife.
