Even though it did hold the numbers, the pro- gram was dropped from the network and went on to become the most successf,.d syndicated program on the air. But the story of the least likely doesn't stop here, because some of the least likely people you might ex- pect to see have popped up on 'Hee Haw,' and the latest to surface in the least likely category is Ed McMahon. But those who would have expected "The Tonight Show's' number two banana to appear totally out of place were pleasantly slJrprised at Ed's recent 'Hee Haw' ap- pearance. He seemed to 'slide' right into placestraw hat, overalls and the whole bit, even down to and includ- ing his solo of 'The Martins & the Coys.' And for a city boy, 'Die Ed's' not bad with his attempt at crooning the country lyrics. Having "13een on the set for Ed's "Hee Haw' taping in Nashville some months ago, I can say that he doesn't come across as the 'big boy from the big city' as yot might imagine. In general cnversa- tion, what he says makes sense, and he does listen when spoken to, which is more than you can say for many others in his league. e$ Soul co-produces stars in "Swan Hollywood, Cafif.--During the filming of 'Swan Song,' David Soul was a kid with a new toy. The two-hour skiing drama that he co-produced for 20th Century-Fox project that's been close to his heart years. It airs Friday, Feb. 8 on AB( Soul is a good skier who learned his native midwest. Ever schizoid David Soul Soul has wanted to film; tive piece about the business of skiing, agents, business reps seeking its own strange band of racer-chasers. "Our story puts a top-flight skier comeback in the middle of this pull with all its pressures and diversions "We had cooperative weather and cameras. It looks beautiful." There is one scene in which Soul his ski poles in exaltation over his fast time. That shot well could symbolize over completing the project despite seemingly insurmountable hurdles. The movie was supposed to have in the winter of 1978. But there were ironing out script problems. Then Soul back injury (yep, skiing) and finally the thwarted by the Sping thaw. Ann Romano (Bonnie Franklin) is more like a sister to her kids than a mother. She also has the unfortunate task of trying to raise her kids in today's society, while trying to ram her way to the top of the business world and maintain a social life as well. Ann has had to deal with younger lovers, pregnancy and a near !' fatal heart attack. Her daughters have had to think twice about going Bonnie Framklln all the way with their and Pat boyfriends, worry about (andlng). their education, while wondering whether their morn might be into the cemetery. For starters, a sign that the producers are about to character out of the show altogether. The simple. MacKenzie Phillips has burned physically and emotionally. Unless she; together, I'm afraid something terrible will talented allottees. Right now she looks as old Franklin. Bonnie Franklin feels secure in her Ann and she pulls it off quite well. But how far in Indnapolis? Ann's feisty style is more New York or Los Angeles. Now there's you.
