FLASH FLOOD AT SKULL VALLEY, ARIZONA When I see an article or read of a flash flood in some area, it brings back a memory of a flood I experienced. In Skull Valley, Arizona in 1935 in the spring of the year when I was almost 12 years old, we had a flash flood, and it is one I will always remember. On the property we leased there was a dry river bed close to our house and a canyon up the river. There would be flash floods in the spring when the sun came out and melted the ice and snow. Then here came the water, and the only warning we had was a loud roar just before we saw the water come around the bend. We never knew when this would happen. One day that spring I was watching my brother Paul, age six, and sister Mary, age three, on the dry river bed. We made roads in the sand and houses and garages out of rocks. Paul had a toy car, but Mary and I had to use rocks for cars. We were enjoying ourselves when we heard a loud roar and looked up, knowing what it meant. Paul and I scrambled up the bank, then noticed Mary was still in the river bed. We both rushed back and grabbed her by the arms and helped her up the bank just as the water came around the bend in the river. We were scared thinking Mary might have been drowned. All the family stood on the bank and watched the water rise. It was now up to the top of the bank. Would it go over and flood our house? As the water roared by we saw sheep, cattle and debris mixed in it. Looking at the dead ani- mals brought tears to my eyes and I wondered what had hap- pened to cause this terrible thing. Aler a few days the water receded and the family went to see the damage. The water had missed our house but flooded the lowlands. Dead sheep and cattle were washed up against bushes and small trees. What an awful sight! When my stepdad went to the store he learned what had hap- pened. There had been a lot of snow in the mountains and it began to melt. A shepherd was herdinghis sheep across abridge in the mountains when the flood washed out the bridge. He was saved, but he lost a lot of his sheep. They were drowned. The cows were probably in the dry river bed when it became flood- ed and they were lost. Copyright: Hazel L.
